Le Fort de Bron

DISCOVERED: The Fort of Bron.

PURPOSE: to prevent a possible enemy advance on Lyon from the hills of Chassieu and St. Priest using cannon technology.

STRUCTURE: trapezoidal, with a dry moat.

HISTORY: as you all probably know, this kind of defensive building quickly became obsolete with the development of newer, greater, faster, stronger war technologies. However, the fort stayed partially staffed and armed until 1914. After 1920, it became a logistics base for a nearby airbase. During World War II, this fort was occupied by German troups, but became the property of the Lyon Urban Community in 1975.

NOWADAYS: The city of Bron uses it as municipal storage. The space surrounding the fort has been turned into an exercise circuit, complete with running trail, children’s park, and outdoor activity bars.
